Your Volkswagen key.Volkswagen key overview:
Volkswagen manufactured most all of its models with a 1 key system.
The exceptions are:
(1) 1967 and older with steering column lock
(2) glove box
(3) shifter lock
Starting in 1983 the glove box key may match the whole car key.
1985 and newer Volkswagens have a valet feature. This key is cut the way the main keys are cut but the blank is not the same.
If your car has profile AH, your valet key is VB or AN.
Many Volkswagen keys look similar. The tendency is to judge the application of the key by the shape or style of the head.
This is not correct. There are many different keys with the same head. You must compare the grooves.
The grooves are referred to as the profile (keyway).
Many profiles are mirror images of themselves. Example su/sv k/m l/r e/h.
Instead of designing a new profile, Volkswagen would just reverse the engineering.
The key cuts are determined by a code. This is a number found on locks and handles from 1949 to 1999. The letter in the code determines the profile.
The 1992 to 1999 cars may not have codes on the handles.
The vehicle identification number (vin) has nothing to do with the lock code.
Only the delivering dealer would have recorded the code.
Volkswagen contracted with lock manufacturers to make the locks.
Some locks are Volkswagen. Others are AKS, WTO, Neiman, Huff, Hella, Ellen to mention the majority.
Those original keys may bear their mark. Those marks are not codes.

Original look keys with emblem can be made from your generic key. To mail flat metal key, tape it to a 3x5 card verticaly (pointing up and down) or it will poke through the envelope. 41 cents will get it here. To send plastic head key you will need to put it in a
bubble or padded envelope 1.13 .
Key and copy (s) will be mailed back. If you have the key code and do not wish to mail the key, Photo copy both sides of the key and write down the code. You may email picture with payment information.

Key code for 68>79 Beetles can be found on the outside door handle, remove the
phillips screw behind the door seal in line with the handle, move the handle
forward and out, the code is on the ear with the screw hole,
check both handles for matching codes,

Key code for early beetles can be found on the outside door handle, remove the phillips
screws behind the door seal in line with the handle, move the handle
forward and out, the code is on the ear at the end with the screw hole,
example code for 61 should be sv123, check both handles for matching
codes,

The 1967 and older ignition switch will have the code on the ear touching the
body where the mounting screw is. Unscrew the screw from under the
dash, go into the trunk and turn the switch up to see the code, it may be
rusty or dirty and you may have to clean it.
  
74-92,Rabbit, Golf, Jetta, Scirocco, have 2 screws, one in line with the
handle and one under the trim strip. The code may be
stamped in three places, on the front hook, the inboard trigger or the
push down lever. example HV7604
you may find it like this HV7604 45/86, denotes week 45 of 1986 and is not part of the code.
vb , hv, ah, n, from 0001 thru 9282
68-79 bus: the easiest place to find a code is the sliding door lock.
68-73 has the key in the handle. The handle is removed by a screw behind
the door panel in line with the handle. The code number is on the square shank,
example 23L111. You may have to clean some grime to see it.
Doors with key cylinder next to the handle, you will have to remove the
door panel and unscrew the latch to gain access to the screw holding the cylinder.
The code is on the side of the cylinder. The front door handles have
the code on the finger that moves the lock up and down, it is poorly stamped
and sometimes difficult to read. You will have to remove the door panel,
allen screws hold the handle on.The rear hatch also has the code on the
finger that moves the latch. Three screws hold it on. They are often very tight.
Ignition switch code location 1968 to 1999.
You must remove cylinder by drilling a 1/8" hole
10mm back from the edge of the housing, in line with the key slot (off position)
shown is a 72-73 housing, the 68-71 and 74-79 housings are similar.

VW sidewinder key application 1998 to 2006
This guide will be updated as information and applications are proven. Volkswagen does not
have a comprehensive application guide or chart. Nor is their parts application of these remotes complete or specific.
Most often miss understood is programming. Programming the button REMOTE portion of the key is simple.
You do need 2 keys. Put one in the ignition switch, turn on, do not start engine.
Close the door, use 2nd key, turn lock and hold in lock position for 10 seconds.
Press a button on the remote, within 2 seconds press the same button again, the alarm horn will "chirp"
this indicates your remote matches the car system and is now recognized.
So don't pay extra 99 cents to $5 for these instructions in hopes of getting the KEY to function with the car.
Instructions are only for the keyless remote, not the key.
Starting in 1998 with the New Beetle and Passat, 1999 with the Golf IV and Jetta IV, the key does not have a computer chip, and does not need to be programmed. The remote has the oval button HLO 1J0 959 753 F . The remote does not have the chrome bar on the end, only the corner loop to attach to a key ring. This remote will not work with 2001 and newer Volkswagens.
1J0959753F original application 11/98 to 09/00 does not have transponder computer chip for 10/00 to 05/01 and newer
Some models, the transition date is different, look for the yellow car with the key under it when you turn the ignition on. Picture of 2000 jetta dash, see the yellow car? It only comes on for a few seconds when you turn the ignition on. Using a key not coded to the car will cause the light to blink.
1J0959753T original application 10/00 to 05/01 but will work from 11/98 to 05/01 New Beetle, Golf, Jetta, Passat (original may look like F)
1J0959753AM original application 06/01 to 2005 New Beetle, Golf, Jetta, Passat but will not work on 05/01 and older cars
In 2001 model yeat (around October 2000) the transition take place with immobilizer 1, (immo1) the addition of a computer chip inside the key portion of the flip key. 2001 is a transition year. The remote changes to the squared buttons but the frequency of the button remote is the same as the older Volkswagens with the oval buttons. This remote will work on the older cars but not the newer cars. HLO 1J0 959 753 T It can be programmed to the engine computer but not to the keyless entry of 2002 (May 2001) and newer Volkswagens. It has the newer look with the chrome bar on the end.
Starting late in 2001 to 2005 the squared button remote has a more common part number HLO 1J0 959 753 AM.
This remote has a different frequency matched only to Golf IV Jetta IV Passat and New Beetle.
It has the chrome bar and a computer chip. Replaced by HLO 1JO959753DC . You will need a VW dealer
or Automotive Locksmith to program the engine computer to recognize the key.
After the key is cut, it will work in the locks, start the engine,
but the engine will shut off as a theft prevention if the engine computer has not been programmed to recognize it.
This key will work in 2000 and older Volkswagens but the 3 button remote will not. It has a different frequency.
Staring in 2005.5 the immobilizer II system started. This is a rotating code for higher security.
Should you use a cloned key from a automotive locksmith made from your key, it will not work a second time.
The engine computer changes the identity code in the computer chip every time the car is started.
Flip Key 1998 to 2006:
The portion of the key that is the key has a part number.
This part number is never advertised because it is often missing or cannot be read.
Your VW dealer sells you that part seperate from the button remote part.
That is why a remote key UNIT is so expensive. The key portion
is $50 to $60 and the remote button portion is $100 to $110.

If you have a broken key blade, have it copied and installed back onto your keyless entry.
No programming is needed.
If you have a good key blade but the remote is damaged or the flip mechanism
is broken you can transfer the computer chip and program the replacement remote to the car.
No programming is needed. Seperate the halfs. Pry the emblem off.
Under the emblem is a phillip screw, remove it. ( I sell replacement emblems)
The halfs will seperate. In the long slot there is a pill, looks like a long black grain of rice.
That is the computer chip. Remove the chip from the new remote and install the old chip.
Now the computer will recognize the new flip key as the old flip key.
You could even attach the old computer chip under the steering column cover
and as long as it is in range, any key will work!
No more programming. You are faking out the system.
All conventional looking keys have a computer chip molded into that fat plastic head.
All of these keys will work and can be programmed to the immo I and immo II systems 1998 to 2006.
